In a shocking incident driven by superstition, a 41-year-old man allegedly killed his 70-year-old mother by stabbing her multiple times, suspecting her of practising witchcraft in Digha village under Gopikandar police station in Dumka district, Jharkhand, on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Ramjan Hembram, has been arrested and sent to jail. Police said the victim had been living at her daughter’s in-laws’ house in Digha for the past few months to escape repeated assaults by her son.
According to reports, three days ago, Ramjan attacked his mother with a knife, leaving her critically injured. She was admitted to Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries late on Sunday night.
In her statement to the police, the victim’s daughter confirmed that her brother, Ramjan Hembram, was responsible for the attack. Acting swiftly, police arrested him from his native Madhuban village and recovered the murder weapon along with blood-stained clothes.

Police officials said preliminary investigations revealed that Ramjan suspected his mother of using black magic to kill his teenage daughter, who had died a few months ago after a prolonged illness.
“During her illness, the girl often claimed that her grandmother had cast a spell on her. After her death, Ramjan became convinced that his mother was responsible,” said an official.
On the day of the incident, the accused reportedly consumed a large amount of alcohol before travelling nearly 15 kilometres to Digha village, where he attacked his mother with a knife. The elderly woman was rushed to the hospital but died during treatment.
Police have registered a case based on the daughter’s statement and have begun further investigation into the incident.
