Security forces achieved a major success against left-wing extremism in Jharkhand on Wednesday after three armed cadres of the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) were killed in an encounter in Gumla district.
The gun battle broke out early in the morning in the dense Kechki forest under Bishunpur police station area when police teams came face to face with the extremists.
Gumla Superintendent of Police Harish Bin Zama said the operation was launched following a tip-off that several JJMP members had gathered in the region to plan a major strike.
Acting on the intelligence input, a joint team of Jharkhand Jaguar commandos and Gumla district police was quickly formed. The forces began a search operation in the forest, during which they were fired upon by the extremists.
In retaliation, security personnel opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange of bullets that lasted several minutes. Three extremists were neutralised in the operation.

They have been identified as Lalu Lohra and Sujit Oraon of Senha in Lohardaga district, and Chhotu Oraon of Hosir in Latehar district. One more cadre was arrested from the site and is currently being interrogated.
Police have also recovered a cache of sophisticated weapons from the slain extremists, including a 5.56 rifle, a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), and an INSAS rifle.
The SP said that combing operations are still under way in the forest to ensure no other cadres remain hidden in the area. He added that the action reflects the strong commitment of Jharkhand Police to curb extremist activities and maintain peace in the district.
The JJMP is an outlawed splinter group active in Gumla, Latehar, and Lohardaga districts, known for extortion, violence, and targeting of security forces. Wednesday’s encounter is being considered a significant setback for the organisation’s network in the region.
