More than 1.55 lakh candidates have registered for the Prime Minister Internship Scheme, surpassing the pilot project’s target of 1.25 lakh, according to official sources on Sunday.
The registration portal for the scheme went live at 5 pm on 12 October, and by Sunday, the total number of registered candidates reached 1,55,109.
Aimed at young people aged 21-24, the scheme is being implemented by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs through the portal www.pminternship.mca.gov.in. Internships are set to begin on 2 December.
The scheme offers a monthly financial assistance of Rs 5,000 for a 12-month period, alongside a one-time grant of Rs 6,000. The estimated initial cost of the pilot project is Rs 800 crore.
Last week, the ministry announced that over 80,000 opportunities had been added across 24 sectors, including oil, gas, energy, travel, hospitality, and
automotive.
“The portal ensures efficient access to internships across sectors with Aadhaar-based registration and tools like bio-data generation,” said a ministry official.
Announced in the Union Budget 2024 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the scheme aims to provide internships in the top 500 companies in India for a year.
