Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged schools and colleges across the country to mark the moment when students become first-time voters, describing voting as the “greatest privilege and responsibility” in a democratic system.
In a letter addressed to MY Bharat volunteers and young citizens on the occasion of National Voters’ Day, Modi called on educational institutions to recognise and celebrate this milestone, while encouraging the youth to actively participate in strengthening India’s democracy.
“Greetings to you, your family and friends on National Voters’ Day! I am happy to connect with you as a fellow citizen who takes great pride in Indian democracy,” the Prime Minister wrote.
Highlighting India’s democratic legacy, Modi said the country is not only the world’s largest democracy but also the “Mother of Democracy”, with traditions of debate and dialogue embedded in its civilisation. He noted that 2026 marks 75 years since the first General Elections held between 1951 and 1952, which he said reflected the inherent democratic spirit of the people.
“To be a voter is the greatest privilege and responsibility in a democracy. Voting is a sacred constitutional right and a mark of participation in Bharat’s future,” Modi said. “That indelible ink on a finger is a badge of honour that ensures our democracy remains vibrant and purposeful.”

Calling first-time voters crucial to the nation’s future, he said they should be welcomed as citizens “who hold the power to transform the destiny of our country”. He encouraged families, neighbourhoods, schools and colleges to celebrate January 25 by recognising young people who have reached voting age.
“Our schools and colleges have a vital role to play as nurseries of democratic values,” Modi said, urging campuses to also serve as centres for voter enrolment and awareness.
The Prime Minister described elections in India as a “festival of democracy”, noting that citizens participate regardless of geography, from the Himalayas to islands, deserts and forests. He said this commitment would continue to inspire future generations.
Modi also praised the participation of women voters, calling the role of “Nari Shakti” essential for an inclusive democracy. He said the engagement of youth through the MY Bharat platform reflected a commitment to service and leadership.
“You belong to a generation that does not wait for things to happen but actively participates in making things happen with a ‘Can Do’ spirit,” he said, urging young people to spread awareness about the importance of voting.
