Nationwide security drill at 259 sites set for tomorrow

Amid heightened India-Pakistan tensions following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, the Centre has scheduled a nationwide civil defence drill on May 7 at 259 locations. The mock exercise will feature air raid sirens, blackout procedures, and public preparedness training, with officials advising citizens to keep torches, candles, and cash on hand.

A nationwide mock drill is scheduled for May 7, 2025, across 244 districts of India. The BJP Parliamentary Party office has asked all BJP MPs to participate in the drill as ordinary citizens and cooperate with the local administration.

A nationwide security preparedness drill will be conducted tomorrow, across 259 locations in India. The exercise aims to enhance first-response capabilities for scenarios such as air raid sirens and blackouts.

This large-scale drill comes amid heightened India-Pakistan tensions following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives. It marks the first civil defence exercise of this scale since 1971.

On Tuesday, Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired a high-level meeting to review and coordinate civil defence readiness. The meeting included Chief Secretaries and Civil Defence Chiefs from various states, with a special focus on the 244 Civil Defence Districts designated in 2010.

These districts—many situated in border regions including Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, and the Northeast—have been directed to simulate multi-hazard scenarios during the drill.

‘Keep torches, candles, cash ready,’ say Officials

Ongoing discussions at the Home Ministry are reviewing the status of 244 civil defence installations across the country, with a focus on evaluating operational readiness and identifying any equipment requiring repair, sources said.

The meeting also centres on civilian training for emergency situations, particularly public response to air raid sirens, blackout protocols, and access to essential supplies. Households are being advised to stock up on medical kits, torches, candles, and cash in preparation for potential electronic disruptions.

More than 100 of the 244 locations have been classified as highly sensitive. On May 5, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed states to conduct mock drills on May 7, amid rising tensions with Pakistan following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 dead.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to pursue the perpetrators of the attack to the “ends of the earth” and deliver punishment “beyond their imagination.” Pakistan has responded with a warning of a “swift and notched-up response.” The Prime Minister continues to hold a series of high-level meetings with top defence officials as India considers its response options.
