Former diplomat and author Navtej Sarna and noted Hindi writer Mamta Kalia are among 24 authors selected for the 2025 Sahitya Akademi Awards across languages recognised by the National Academy of Letters.
The Akademi announced the winners on Monday, months after a scheduled press conference in December 2025 to declare the awards was cancelled.
In a statement, the Akademi said the awards honour outstanding literary works across 24 Indian languages. “Sahitya Akademi is happy to announce today its annual Sahitya Akademi Awards in 24 Indian languages recognised by it. Eight books of poetry, four novels, six books of short stories, two essays, one literary criticism, one autobiography and two memoirs have won the Sahitya Akademi Awards 2025,” the statement said.
Sarna has been chosen for his novel Crimson Spring, while Kalia will receive the award for her memoir Jeete Jee Allahabad.
The awardees will receive a casket containing an engraved copper plaque, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh at a ceremony scheduled to be held on March 31, the Akademi said.
Among other recipients, Prasun Bandyopadhyay has been honoured in Bengali for Shrestha Kabita, while Yogesh Vaidya received the award in Gujarati for Bhattkhadaki. Amresh Nugadoni was selected in Kannada for Dada Seerisu Tande, and N Prabhakaran in Malayalam for Maayamanushyar.

In Marathi, the award goes to Raju Baviskar for Kalyanilya Resha, while Jinder has been recognised in Punjabi for Safety Kit. Jitender Kumar Soni received the award in Rajasthani for Bharkhama, and Sa Tamilselvan in Tamil for Thamiz Sirukathaiyin Thadangal.
Other awardees include Pritpal Singh Betab for Safar Jari Hai in Urdu, Nandini Sidha Reddy for Animesha in Telugu, Bhagwan Atlani for Waghoo in Sindhi and Sumitra Soren for Mid Birna Chenne Saon Inag Sagai in Santali.
In Sanskrit, Mahamahopadhyay Sahu Bhadreshdas was selected for Prasthanacatustaye Brahmaghosah, while Girijakumar Baliyar Singh received the award in Odia for Padapurana. Prakash Bhattarai has been honoured in Nepali for Nepali Paramparik Sanskriti Ra Sabhyata Ko Dukuti, and Haobam Nalini in Manipuri for Kanglamdriba Eephut.
The annual Sahitya Akademi Awards recognise outstanding literary contributions in languages recognised by the Akademi and are considered among the most prestigious literary honours in the country.
