In an official statement, the NTA admitted that the exam "could not be allowed to stand" if the system's transparency and credibility were to be preserved.

The integrity of India’s most prestigious medical entrance exam has been thrown into turmoil following the cancellation of NEET UG 2026. The decision, which affects hundreds of thousands of aspirants, follows credible allegations that a "guess paper" was leaked prior to the exam on May 3. Acting on intelligence from central agencies, the government has moved to scrap the results and order a full-scale investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The National Testing Agency (NTA) confirmed the move after reviewing evidence from law enforcement suggesting that the examination process had been compromised. In an official statement, the NTA admitted that the exam "could not be allowed to stand" if the system's transparency and credibility were to be preserved. By handing the case to the CBI, authorities hope to uncover how the leaked material was circulated and whether it was the work of an organised syndicate.

While the agency acknowledged the significant distress and inconvenience this causes to students and their families, it maintained that allowing a tainted exam to proceed would do far greater long-term damage to the medical profession. Consequently, a re-examination has been mandated. Students will not need to go through the application process again, as existing records will be used to facilitate the new test, the dates for which are expected to be announced shortly.

Once again, this issue has thrown a cloud of doubt over the safety of these examinations held in India. The tens of thousands of students, who have prepared for years, now find their attention redirected back to the study table, as they wait for another date to be finalised. While the authorities have asked the candidates to avoid falling prey to any rumors on social media, and only rely on official sources for information, the authorities are trying to send a strong message that there is no tolerance towards cheating.
