The Odisha Police have released a statement claiming that no other person was involved in the burning of a 15-year-old girl from Puri district, who died from her injuries on Saturday. This finding contradicts the initial police report filed by the victim's mother, who alleged that three unknown attackers had set her daughter on fire.
The girl had been receiving treatment at AIIMS-Delhi since the incident occurred on July 19 near her home in the Balanga area. She was initially airlifted to the national capital from Bhubaneswar for specialised medical care. Despite the police's recent statement, they have not provided an explanation for how the girl 'caught' fire.
In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Odisha Police expressed their condolences, stating, "We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of the victim girl in the Balanga incident. The police have conducted the investigation with utmost sincerity. The investigation has reached its final stage. According to the investigation conducted so far, it is clear that no other person is involved. Therefore, we request everyone not to make any sensitive comments regarding this matter during this tragic moment."
The case originated from a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the girl's mother at the Balanga police station on July 19. The mother had alleged that her daughter was abducted by three individuals who then doused her with a flammable substance and set her on fire. Following the registration of the case, senior police officials visited the scene. A special investigation team was formed, and scientific teams and dog squads were deployed to gather evidence.
