The student beat-down and alleged use of pellet guns in the national capital are set to dominate parliament proceedings today after nearly a month-long CJP protest ended with the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
While the Congress party is seeking to raise the issue with all its might, other parties in the INDIA Bloc, including the TMC led by Mamata Banerjee and the Samajwadi Party, are also set to corner the Narendra Modi government during Monday’s session.
TMC’s Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, Sagarika Ghosh, has submitted a notice under Rule 267 to discuss the “use of excessive force on student protesters”.
She said the right to peaceful protest and assembly is a constitutional right and that students participating in peaceful protests against irregularities in examination papers were “targeted with lethal and semi-lethal force” by security agencies.
Ghosh has also sought suspension of the day’s business and an immediate discussion on the issue.
When asked about disrupting the House proceedings, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said the strategy would be decided at the meeting of opposition leaders on Monday.
The party has claimed Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation as a victory for students but asserted that the Prime Minister must also issue an apology to them.
Congress party president Mallikarjun Kharge said it was now Modi’s turn to apologise and take strict action against all those who used lathis, batons and pellet guns against the agitating students.
Meanwhile, a proactive step has been taken by the central government, as the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, has been sent to members of parliament for evaluation ahead of its introduction.
The Bill proposes a minimum jail term of five years, extendable to 10 years, and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh for those involved in paper leaks or the use of unfair means in examinations.
