The government announced on Thursday that over 13 lakh Indian students are currently pursuing higher studies abroad in 2024, as revealed by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in the Rajya Sabha.
In a written response to queries regarding the data on emigrant students, Singh provided country-wise details encompassing 108 nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Singapore, Russia, Israel, and Ukraine.
As of now, a total of 1,335,878 Indian students are studying abroad. This marks an increase from 1,318,955 in 2023 and 907,404 in 2022.
Notably, Canada remains a popular destination with approximately 427,000 students, followed by the United States with 337,630, China with 8,580, Greece with 8, Israel with 900, and Ukraine with 2,510 students.
Singh highlighted the proactive measures undertaken by Indian Missions and Posts abroad, which engage with students to encourage voluntary registration with the Global Rishta Portal.
The Missions organise 'Welcome Ceremonies' for first-time travellers, providing essential information on security issues in host countries. Additionally, they work closely with local authorities to gather data on Indian students overseas.
In another response, Singh noted that the Indian government is striving to expand the number of countries offering visa-free entry and visa-on-arrival facilities for Indian citizens, facilitating smoother global travel.
