A major disaster was averted on Saturday when railway employees swiftly responded to a fire that broke out in one of the AC coaches of the Amritsar-Saharsa Express (train 12204) at Sirhind station in Punjab.
Fortunately, no passengers were injured during the incident. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and the train resumed its journey towards Saharsa in Bihar after thorough safety checks.
Railway officials said smoke was first detected around 7.30 a.m. As soon as the fire was noticed, employees promptly evacuated all passengers from the affected coach and moved them to other coaches on the train. Emergency teams quickly extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading further.
A statement from the Railways said, “As soon as the incident was noticed, railway authorities swung into action and shifted the passengers immediately to other coaches. The fire was extinguished quickly. The train will depart for its destination shortly. No casualties. Time of incident 7.30 a.m.”

Videos circulating online showed fire extinguishers in use to control the blaze, while other footage captured passengers standing safely on the railway tracks as smoke billowed from the affected coach.
A police official confirmed that smoke was observed in one of the AC coaches and that all passengers were evacuated safely. Fire tenders were called in immediately to put out the fire.
Train number 12204, the Amritsar-Saharsa Garib Rath Express, covers a distance of 1,716 km in over 31 hours. It operates three days a week from Amritsar — Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday — and stops at 23 stations along its route, including Beas, Jalandhar City, Phagwara, Dhandari Kalan, Ambala Cantt, Delhi, Hapur, Moradabad, Bareilly, Hardoi, Lucknow NR, Gorakhpur, Deoria Sadar, Siwan, Chhapra, Hajipur, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Dalsingh Sarai, Barauni, Begu Sarai, Khagaria, and S Bakhtiyarpur.
The prompt action of railway employees ensured that the incident did not escalate into a major tragedy, with all passengers reported safe and accounted for.
