Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera and several other newly elected representatives took their oaths as members of the Rajya Sabha on the opening day of Parliament's Monsoon Session. Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan administered the oath to the members in the Upper House. Among those sworn in was Khera, who represents Karnataka after being elected unopposed in June 2026 alongside veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who was re-elected, and Mansoor Ali Khan. The BJP's M Nagaraj was also among those elected unopposed from the state.
The ceremony saw participation across various political parties. From the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Dr Mukeshbhai J Rathwa from Gujarat and Mahesh Kewat from Madhya Pradesh officially took their oaths of office. Representing the Northeast, James Pangsang Kongkal Sangma of the National People's Party (NPP) was sworn in for Meghalaya, whilst Prakash Chik Baraik of the BJP was administered the oath as a member representing West Bengal. The ceremony took place in the presence of senior officials from the Rajya Sabha Secretariat and other dignitaries.
Meanwhile, proceedings in the Lok Sabha were adjourned until 12 noon shortly after the House assembled for the first day of the session, following continuous sloganeering by Opposition members. The protests centred on demands for immediate discussions regarding the NEET examination controversy and allegations of donation embezzlement linked to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust in Ayodhya.
The Lower House had initially commenced with Speaker Om Birla making obituary references to former Members of Parliament, including Nadendla Bhaskara Rao, Omwati Devi, Sudhangshu Seal, Major General Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, KP Dhanapalan, Pyare Lal Sankhwar, and His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Father Amir of the State of Qatar. But right after the end of the references, MPs from the opposition started shouting slogans. Though multiple requests were made by Speaker Om Birla to let the session resume, the consistent disruption had to lead to a brief adjournment.
