Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has made an effort to repair strained diplomatic relations with Indian Prime Minister Modi, following their meeting in Delhi for the first time as Prime Ministers. It is also the first official visit of a Canadian Prime Minister to India since the resolution of the low point in diplomatic relations under Prime Minister Carney's new government.

The talks at Hyderabad House moved quickly past the grievances of the past, focusing instead on a pragmatic, "economy-first" agenda. Central to the discussions were energy cooperation — including potential long-term uranium and LNG deals — and the revival of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

The two leaders explored fresh collaborations in artificial intelligence (AI), critical minerals, and digital innovation.

Carney began his trip in Mumbai, engaging with major Indian and Canadian CEOs and pension fund managers to reinforce institutional investment before heading to the capital for political talks.

Both Prime Ministers were at the India-Canada CEOs Forum, which is supposed to align private sector growth with government agendas.

Regional Security: Both examined global developments regarding Indo-Pacific security and look for expansion of trade and security diversify.

In a post on X, Carney struck an optimistic tone: “Canada and India are two confident and ambitious nations who want to build boldly together. We’re forging new partnerships in energy, talent and innovation, and AI – to create greater security and prosperity for our peoples.”

This meeting happens at a time of substantial difficulty in relations. They had deteriorated after both sides expelled diplomats as a result of allegations regarding the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The tone of this meeting, however, indicates that both sides desire to re-establish normalised relations based on "mutual respect for the sensitivities of each side", as well as a desire to establish a stronger, technology-driven future partnership.
