Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on March 1, inaugurating and laying the foundation stones of key infrastructure and development projects worth more than Rs 7,100 crore, officials said on Friday.

Modi will arrive in Chennai on Saturday night after visiting Rajasthan and Gujarat and commence his programme the following morning. In Puducherry, he is scheduled to inaugurate and dedicate to the nation projects worth over Rs 2,700 crore, including urban development, industrial expansion, water and sewerage projects, e-Bus services under PM e-Bus Seva, and housing for economically weaker sections. The PM will also inaugurate the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Block and Ganga Hostel of the National Institute of Technology, Karaikal, alongside upgrades to the Regional Cancer Centre at JIPMER and new facilities at Pondicherry University.

In Tamil Nadu, Modi will visit Madurai to inaugurate projects valued at over Rs 4,400 crore and perform darshan at Arulmigu Subramaniyaswamy Temple, Tirupparankundram. Projects include four-laning of the Marakkanam-Puducherry section of NH-332A and the Paramakudi–Ramanathapuram section of NH-87, enhancing connectivity to major religious sites, ports, and industrial clusters. Both projects are expected to cut travel time by 40–50 per cent and boost regional economic activity.

Additionally, the Chennai Beach–Chennai Egmore fourth rail line will improve operational efficiency in the suburban network, benefiting daily commuters and freight services.

Modi is set to launch three new Akashvani FM relay transmitters at Kumbakonam, Yercaud, and Vellore, expanding coverage and strengthening public broadcasting across the state.

Officials said the tour will integrate infrastructure, industrial development, education, healthcare, and urban services, creating a comprehensive boost to the region’s socio-economic growth. The visit also highlights the central government’s focus on multi-modal connectivity, industrial investment, and improved urban and rural infrastructure under schemes like PMGSY, SASCI, and PM Gati Shakti.
