The conversation reflects India's continued emphasis on maintaining regional peace and preventing further destabilisation, especially in a region critical to global energy supply chains and strategic security.

In the wake of heightened tensions in the Middle East following US airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear sites, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation on Sunday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which he expressed deep concern over the developments and called for immediate de-escalation in hostilities.

During the call, PM Modi reiterated India’s long-standing position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable paths forward in resolving conflict and ensuring long-term peace. He also stressed the need for the early restoration of regional peace, security, and stability, particularly in a region already rocked by missile attacks and retaliatory strikes.

“Spoke with President of Iran @drpezeshkian. We discussed in detail about the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability,” the Prime Minister posted on X following the call.

The conversation came just hours after the United States carried out a coordinated bombing campaign on three critical Iranian nuclear facilities — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — in what Washington described as a preemptive action to dismantle Iran’s nuclear enrichment capabilities. Former US President Donald Trump, addressing the nation, called the strikes a “spectacular military success,” claiming that the mission had successfully achieved its primary goal of destroying Iran’s ability to develop weapons-grade nuclear material. Trump also warned that further military action could follow if Iran attempted any form of retaliation.

In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi issued a strong condemnation, accusing the United States of violating international law, the UN Charter, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). In a post on X, Araghchi described the strikes as an act of “criminal behavior” by a permanent member of the UN Security Council, targeting facilities that Iran claims are peaceful nuclear installations.

“The events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences. Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior,” Araghchi stated. According to reports, the US used six bunker buster bombs to target the heavily fortified Fordow facility. Additionally, 30 Tomahawk missiles, launched from US submarines positioned roughly 400 miles away, struck the Natanz and Isfahan sites, inflicting substantial damage.

As international tensions rise, India has positioned itself as a voice of restraint, urging both sides to avoid further escalation and to return to the negotiating table. PM Modi’s outreach to President Pezeshkian underscores India’s concern over regional instability and the potential global repercussions of a deepening conflict in the Middle East.
