Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched a sharp counterattack against the Opposition for raising doubts over the timing of Operation Mahadev, an anti-terror operation in which three Pakistani terrorists linked to the Pahalgam terror attack were killed.

During a debate in Parliament on Operation Sindoor, PM Modi responded to the Opposition’s criticism with a sarcastic remark, asking whether the government was expected to wait for an auspicious day like ‘saawan ka somwar’ to take action. His statement came amid Opposition allegations that the timing of the encounter was politically motivated.

“What is wrong with these people? Such deep-rooted disappointment? For weeks, they asked, ‘What happened to the Pahalgam terrorists?’ But now, when action has been taken, they question its timing,” Modi said, slamming the Opposition’s shifting stance. He further took aim at the Congress party, accusing it of aligning with Pakistan’s narrative. The Prime Minister expressed shock that Congress leaders demanded proof that the terrorists involved in the April 22 Pahalgam attack were from Pakistan — a stance he said mirrored Islamabad’s own position.

“The country is surprised that Congress has effectively given a clean chit to Pakistan. They are asking for proof that the Pahalgam terrorists were from Pakistan. Pakistan is saying the same thing. It is unfortunate that the Opposition is echoing their voice,” PM Modi added.

Earlier in the day, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also questioned the timing of the operation, suggesting political motives behind the encounter. “Why am I not congratulating you on Operation Mahadev? All political parties had extended support when the time was right. But why did this encounter happen yesterday?” Yadav asked in Parliament.

The operation was jointly conducted by the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, and resulted in the killing of three militants involved in the Pahalgam terror strike.

The three terrorists who were killed, Suleman, Afghan, and Jibran, were all Pakistani nationals and members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), according to a previous confirmation by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Shah added that these were the same people who carried out the vicious attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 people. As a reaction to the earlier calls for justice from the victims of the Pahalgam attack, the encounter under Operation Mahadev represented a major advancement in India's counterterrorism efforts in Jammu and Kashmir.
