Noted lyricist, writer and communications expert Prasoon Joshi has been appointed Chairman of Prasar Bharati, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced on Saturday, placing the noted lyricist and communications expert at the helm of India’s public service broadcaster.

Joshi, known for his work across literature, advertising and cinema, succeeds to the top role at a time when public broadcasting is undergoing rapid technological change and shifting audience preferences.

In an official statement, the ministry described Joshi as a “distinguished creative professional” with wide-ranging contributions spanning film lyrics, advertising campaigns and socially resonant storytelling that connects with diverse audiences across the country.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated Joshi on his appointment. “My heartfelt congratulations to Shri Prasoon Joshi ji on his appointment as chairman of the Prasar Bharati Board. Prasoon ji is a rare creative spirit celebrated across the world in advertising, literature, art and cinema, yet his heart beats unmistakably for India,” Vaishnaw said.

He added that Joshi’s work reflects a deep cultural sensibility. “Under his stewardship, Prasar Bharati will discover renewed energy, deeper purpose, and a fresh creative voice. My very best wishes to him for a memorable and meaningful tenure ahead,” the minister said.

Before this appointment, Joshi served as chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification since August 2017, where he was associated with film certification processes and engagement with industry stakeholders. His tenure reflected what the statement described as a balanced approach towards creative expression and regulatory responsibility.

He has also held senior positions in the advertising industry, including as Chief Executive Officer of McCann World Group India and Chairman of McCann World Group Asia Pacific. In addition, he has been a trustee of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts since 2016.

Established under the Prasar Bharati Act, 1990, the broadcaster operates two major divisions: All India Radio, one of the world’s largest radio networks, and Doordarshan, the national television broadcaster offering news, education and entertainment programming.

Joshi’s appointment is expected to bring a creative perspective to the organisation’s leadership as it navigates evolving media landscapes and audience expectations.
