Speaking at the inauguration of the two-day Visitor’s Conference 2024-25 at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, President Droupadi Murmu has stressed the importance of reviving India's scientific traditions.

She also called for greater social inclusion in education. "Economic, social, or psychological barriers should not stop anyone from accessing higher education," Murmu added.

Murmu has urged intensive research to uncover India’s forgotten scientific contributions. She highlighted historical figures like Suyya in Kashmir and the advancements of the Gupta period.

She encouraged institutions to integrate Indian Knowledge Systems into modern education. “India has a rich tradition of scientific achievements,” Murmu added. She urged universities to research and rediscover lost knowledge. "It is essential to document overlooked scientific contributions from ancient India," she added.

She also called on institutional leaders to support students beyond academics. “Ensuring the well-being of students should be a top priority,” she said. She stressed the need for moral and emotional guidance.

Murmu noted a decline in classroom enthusiasm since the pandemic. She emphasised the need for interactive learning. “Nothing can replace the direct interaction between students and teachers. Experiential learning will help maintain students’ interest,” she said.

She also linked national progress to the strength of the education system. She urged institutions to prioritise research alongside teaching. She highlighted the National Research Fund as a crucial step in boosting innovation. “Research should focus on novelty, practical use, and broad impact,” she said. She encouraged Indian researchers to find solutions for local and national challenges.

Setting an ambitious vision, she said, “Indian researchers should win world-class awards. Our patents should drive global change. Students from developed countries should come to India for higher education.”

During the event, several researchers received awards. Professor Saripella Srikrishna (Banaras Hindu University) won the innovation award for his work in quantum technology. Professor Ashwini Kumar Nangia (University of Hyderabad) was recognised for developing affordable, high-bioavailability drugs.

Professor Rina Chakrabarti (University of Delhi) and Professor Raj Kumar (Central University of Punjab) jointly won the biological sciences award for their work in aquaculture and cancer research. Venkateswarlu Chintala (Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya) received the technology development award for converting plastic waste into fuel.

The conference will continue on Tuesday, discussing flexible courses, international collaboration, and student assessments. The final conclusions will be presented to the President at the closing session.
