Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited Maulana Azad Medical College and Hospital on Monday and held a meeting with the doctors to review the situation on the ground. Following the interaction, she sharply criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for the deteriorating condition of the institution and its infrastructure.

Expressing her concern, Gupta said she was shocked by the poor state of the hospital’s administration and the maintenance of the medical college. She pointed out the alarming overcrowding in the student hostels. “I’m surprised by the work of the previous government on the hospital administration and the maintenance of the medical college. The college and the students are in a very bad condition. Seven hostels that were built between 1966 and 1990 with a capacity for 1,200 students are now housing around 3,200 students,” she told reporters.

Gupta went on to call the situation shameful, stating that the lack of renovation or repair work during the AAP government’s tenure posed a direct threat to student safety. “It is very shameful that no renovation or repair work has been done. It is very painful that our medical students are living there in such adverse circumstances, which is a threat to their security,” she said.

Referring to past incidents involving female students in hostels, including serious cases like rape, the Chief Minister held the former administration accountable for failing to provide a secure and well-structured campus. “Earlier also there have been mishappenings — cases like rape have happened. If the previous government has not given them a safe environment and a compact campus, then this in itself is very shameful,” Gupta added.

She assured that the current administration will act swiftly to improve conditions. “Immediately, the government will provide the facilities for repair, and the provision of new hostels will also be explored without delay,” she announced. Gupta’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the condition of public healthcare infrastructure in Delhi and the safety of students in government-run medical colleges.
