Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Rajkumar Rai, also known as Allah Rai, was shot dead on Wednesday evening in Patna’s Munna Chak area under Chitragupt Nagar police station limits, officials said.
Parichay Kumar, SP East, said Rai was gunned down in an ambush by criminals who had been chasing him. “The deceased, a resident of Vaishali Raghopur, currently lived in Munna Chak. He had returned from some work in a four-wheeler and had stopped to buy food items from a hotel in the street near his house when the criminals fired six bullets at him. He fell to the ground immediately. On receiving the information, the Chitragupt Nagar police station, located just steps away, reached the spot,” Kumar said.
Rai was rushed to PMCH hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
SP East confirmed that CCTV footage shows two criminals involved in the attack. Six bullet shells were recovered from the scene. “The deceased was associated with a political party and also had some land-related business,” Kumar added.
The case is being investigated by SP East Parichay Kumar, ASP Sadar Shri Abhinav, Kankarbagh police station in-charge Abhay Kumar, and Chitragupt Nagar police station in-charge.

The CBI registered the case on September 15, 2016, following a request by the Bihar Government and a notification from the Government of India. It took over the probe earlier registered at Siwan police station under Sections 302, 120-B, 34 of the IPC and Section 27 of the Arms Act against unknown persons, the agency said in a statement.
The FIR alleged that on May 13, 2016, journalist Rajdeo Ranjan was shot dead. After investigation, the CBI filed its first supplementary charge sheet in December 2016 against Sonu Kumar Soni, and later a second supplementary charge sheet against several accused including Mohd. Shahabuddin, Mohd Azharuddin Beg alias Laddan Miya, Vijay Kumar Gupta, Rohit Soni, Rajesh Kumar, Rishu Jaiswal, Sonu Kumar Gupta, and Sonu Soni.
Sonu Kumar Soni is being tried separately before the Juvenile Court. During the trial, Shahabuddin died and proceedings against him were abated.
The court found merit in the charges and handed down life sentences to the three accused.
It also directed the District Legal Service Authority, Muzaffarpur, to provide compensation to the victim’s family in accordance with the law, the CBI said.
