Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has been admitted to New Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here, sources said on Tuesday.
A hospital source told reporters that it was a “routine” admission on Monday evening and that she was doing fine, but kept under observation by a doctor specialising in chest infections.
“She has this problem of chronic cough, for which she keeps coming for check-ups, especially with this pollution in the city,” said the source, as quoted by media.
Chairman of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Ajay Swaroop, said that following a detailed medical examination, it was found that Sonia Gandhi's bronchial asthma had been mildly exacerbated due to the combined effects of cold weather and prevailing pollution levels in Delhi. As a precautionary measure, doctors decided to admit her for observation and further medical management.
"She was experiencing respiratory discomfort, and upon medical examination, it was found that her bronchial asthma had been mildly exacerbated due to the combined effects of cold weather and pollution. As a precautionary measure, she was admitted for further observation and treatment. At present, her condition is absolutely stable," Swaroop said in an official statement.
Providing further details on her treatment, the hospital chairman stated that the Congress MP is responding well to the treatment and she is being managed with antibiotics and other supportive medications.

Gandhi, who turned 79 in December last year, underwent a health scare in 2025, when she was in medical care in the month of June for an abdominal infection. The Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson had been admitted in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s gastroenterology department for four days, where she was treated for an abdominal infection before being released. There were also reports that she had checked in to a Shimla hospital in June last year on complaint of high blood pressure, during a personal trip to the hill station along with her daughter, Priyanka Gandhi.
