SSB personnel stand with the detained Brazilian and Nigerian nationals, who are suspected of escaping Nepal jails during recent anti-government protests, at a border checkpoint along the India-Nepal frontier.

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has apprehended two Nigerians and a Brazilian national who are suspected to have escaped from jails in Nepal during the recent anti-government protests, officials said on Saturday.

Officials stated that over the past few days, authorities have intercepted more than 79 individuals at different points along the 1,751-km unfenced frontier, including the Bangladeshi citizen and some Indians. “These people have been caught from the border over the last three-four days after they escaped from various jails following the massive anti-government protests in Nepal,” they said.

Of those detained, about 43 were apprehended in Bihar, 22 in Uttar Pradesh, 12 in Uttarakhand, and two in West Bengal. The Nigerian and Brazilian nationals were intercepted from Jainagar in Bihar on Friday, while the Bangladeshi was arrested from the state a few days earlier.

The SSB has also issued three emergency helpline numbers, 1903, 0522-2728816, and 0522-298657, to assist Indian citizens stranded in Nepal. The India-Nepal border spans 20 districts across five states.

Nepal’s parliamentary elections have been scheduled for March 5, the office of President Ramchandra Paudel announced. The announcement follows a week of violent protests that led to the resignation of former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and the swearing-in of Sushila Karki as the country’s first woman prime minister.

Nepal police reported that at least 51 people, including an Indian woman, died during the youth-led protests.
