Trinamool Congress leaders Mahua Moitra and Kirti Azad have publicly aligned themselves with the 'Cockroach Janta Party', a satirical movement launched online after Chief Justice Surya Kant drew heavy criticism for comparing certain sections of the youth to "cockroaches".

The row erupted during a court hearing when the Chief Justice observed that there are youngsters who, lacking employment or a footing in a profession, turn to media, social media, or activism and "start attacking everyone". The selection of such terms immediately generated rage on social media, leading to the formation of the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) on X (previously known as Twitter). Calling themselves “the voice of the lazy and unemployed,” this joke account quickly grew popular, attracting more than 15,000 followers in just 24 hours and boasting a total of 40,000 members at one point.

Amidst its increasing popularity, the CJP published an official statement addressing its stand against any backlash it might receive. The group emphasised that despite any attempts to paint them as anti-social elements, they firmly believe in and stand by the values of the Indian Constitution.

The movement gained serious political flavour on Sunday when TMC leaders Kirti Azad and Mahua Moitra requested to join the swarm. Azad, a former cricketer, jokingly asked what qualifications were required to enlist, to which the CJP account replied that winning the 1983 World Cup was more than enough. Moitra soon followed suit, dryly asking to join the CJP alongside her status as a "card-carrying member of the Anti-National Party." The account warmly accepted her, calling her the fighter that democracy needs.

In the wake of the intense backlash, Chief Justice Kant issued a clarification, insisting his oral remarks had been completely misinterpreted and misquoted by a section of the media. He maintained that his criticism was never aimed at the country's unemployed youth, but rather at individuals operating with fake and bogus credentials. He clarified that his comments were directed at those who sneak into noble professions — like law, media, and social media — using forged degrees, describing them as "parasites". Dismissing the reports as entirely baseless, the Chief Justice added that he remains immensely proud of India's youth, who continue to inspire him.
