Wedding joy turns to tragedy for Lt Narwal's family

Vinay Narwal’s mother, unaware that her only son had been killed by terrorists, was handing out sweets when she received the tragic news.

Lt Vinay Narwal remains.

Married just a few days ago, 26-year-old Indian Navy officer Lieutenant Vinay Narwal was on his honeymoon in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam when terrorists shot him dead. Narwal got married on April 16 and the reception was three days later.

Vinay Narwal’s mother, unaware that her only son had been killed by terrorists, was handing out sweets when she received the tragic news. Hailing from Bhusli village in Karnal district, Narwal’s family presently lives in Karnal.

“Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, CNS, and all Personnel of the Indian Navy are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Lt Vinay Narwal who fell to the dastardly terror attack in Pahalgam. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family during this moment of unimaginable grief. The #IndianNavy also stands in solemn solidarity with all others who lost their lives in this heinous act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ families and we pray for the swift recovery of those injured,” the Indian Navy said in a post on X.

“After the marriage, everyone was celebrating and in a happy mood. And now suddenly this sad news comes,” said Vinay Narwal’s neighbour.

“....We saw videos where a girl was crying and pleading with the terrorists to kill her too but they told her they were sparing her so that she can tell (PM Narendra) Modi what happened,” she said without elaborating.

Narwal did his engineering and later cleared the exams to become an officer in the Indian Navy. Narwal is remembered by his colleagues as a cheerful and dedicated officer. “Lt Narwal was always cheerful and deeply committed to his duties,” a Navy officer recalled.

The 26-year-old had been serving at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi for the past one and a half years after joining the Navy in 2022, officials said.

At least 28 people—mostly tourists—were killed by terrorists on Tuesday at the Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam, in one of the worst attacks on civilians in Kashmir in recent years.

Lt Narwal honoured at Delhi Airport:

As the country grieves the loss of 28 lives in the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, tributes were paid to Navy Lieutenant Vinay Narwal at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday.

“I hope his soul rests in peace. He lived a good life. He made us very proud, and we must always hold on to that pride,” said Himanshi Narwal as she said goodbye to her husband.

Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi laid a wreath on Narwal’s body to pay his respects. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also paid tribute and was seen trying to comfort Narwal’s grieving wife.
