Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hoisted a saffron ‘Dharma Dhwaj’ atop the 191-foot-high shikhara (spire) of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, formally marking the completion of the temple’s construction.
He was joined during the flag-hoisting ceremony by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Prior to the ceremony, the Prime Minister held a grand roadshow en route to the temple complex and paid a visit to the newly constructed Sapt Mandir, which houses shrines dedicated to Maharshi Vashishtha, Maharshi Vishwamitra, Maharshi Agastya, Maharshi Valmiki, Devi Ahilya, Nishadraj Guha, and Mata Shabari.
“Landed in Ayodhya to take part in the Dhwajarohan Utsav at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir,” PM Modi wrote in a Facebook post shortly after his arrival. The saffron ‘Dharma Dhwaj’ bears three sacred symbols – Om, the Sun, and the Kovidara tree – each embodying profound spiritual significance deeply rooted in the Sanatan tradition.
The Kovidara tree is a unique hybrid of the Mandar and Parijat trees, said to have been created by Rishi Kashyap, exemplifying ancient Indian knowledge of plant hybridisation. The Sun symbolises Lord Ram’s lineage from the Suryavansh (solar dynasty), while Om represents the primordial and eternal spiritual sound.
The flag-hoisting ceremony was timed to coincide with the auspicious ‘Abhijit Muhurat’ on the occasion of Shri Ram and Maa Sita’s Vivah Panchami.
At noon, the Prime Minister personally hoisted the flag, signifying the formal completion of the grand temple’s construction and opening a new chapter of cultural celebration and national unity.
Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the occasion as the “renaissance of Sanatan culture”.
In a post on X, he wrote, “In the foremost of the seven sacred cities, the divine Shri Ayodhya Dham, today, from the sacred hands of the honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, a grand saffron flag is about to be hoisted atop the spire of the Lord Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple.
This divine message of the renaissance of Sanatan culture is infusing indomitable spiritual and soulful energy throughout the entire Bharatvarsha. The faith, penance, and anticipation of crores of Ram devotees are today about to be established at a new pinnacle. The nation is today immersed in Ram, immersed in Dharma.”
