Yellow alert in Delhi as heat soars, mercury may cross 45°C

Delhi Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a further rise in temperatures over the next three days, with mercury likely to exceed 45 degrees Celsius.

Visitors get drenched as they stand near sprinklers for respite from the scorching heat, at the lawns near Kartavya Path in New Delhi, Monday.

Delhi began the week under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring to a scorching 44 degrees Celsius on Monday — the highest recorded temperature in the city so far this June. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that conditions are likely to worsen, with temperatures expected to exceed 45 degrees Celsius over the next few days.

According to IMD, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 27.6 degrees Celsius on Monday morning, with humidity levels hovering around 48 per cent. The combination of high heat and humidity is likely to result in extremely uncomfortable weather across the region.

On Sunday, the national capital had already touched 42.1 degrees Celsius, setting the stage for a relentless rise in temperatures. With a heatwave looming, Delhi has been placed under a yellow alert for the next four days. The IMD has cautioned residents about the persistence of “hot and humid” conditions across the region.

Speaking on the outlook, IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava said, “If we talk about Northwest India, then for the next four days, most of the subdivisions—especially in the plains—are likely to experience heatwave conditions. In Delhi NCR, the temperature is expected to rise above 45 degrees Celsius today and tomorrow [Monday and Tuesday], creating heatwave conditions in isolated places. A yellow alert has been issued for the region.”

As temperatures soar, air quality in the city has also taken a hit. On Monday morning, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 219, which falls under the “poor” category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). AQI levels in this range can cause respiratory discomfort, especially for sensitive groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing lung conditions.

Thus, apart from the punishing heat and stifling humidity, worsening air quality adds another layer of concern for Delhi’s residents.

However, there may be some relief in sight. The IMD has predicted a shift in weather patterns that could bring light to moderate rainfall by midweek. The showers are expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, particularly in parts of North India.

As per the IMD’s latest bulletin:

  • Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall on June 13 and 14.
  • Uttarakhand and East Uttar Pradesh could witness scattered rainfall from June 11 to 14.
  • Punjab may receive some showers on June 14.

Though the rainfall may be sporadic, it is expected to provide temporary respite from the blistering heat and may also lead to marginal improvement in air quality. Nevertheless, the IMD has advised residents to stay cautious due to the likelihood of thunderstorms and strong winds during this period.

As the capital braces for extreme weather, authorities and health experts continue to urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and take all necessary precautions to cope with the ongoing heatwave.
