JMM-Congress likely to settle on 7-7 formula in Jharkhand

JMM has demanded 12 seats in Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha and Assam.

JMM-Congress likely to settle on 7-7 formula in Jharkhand

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Congress are set to finalise a 7-7 seat sharing plan in Jharkhand for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, while the JMM has demanded a total of 12 seats in tribal dominated areas of Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha and Assam, sources close to JMM senior leaders said.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren had a meeting with Congress president Mallikarjun Kahrge and AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik in Delhi on Sunday, where the two parties had detailed discussions on seat sharing for Lok Sabha polls.

Sources said that it has been agreed to give 7-7 seats to both the parties. If a situation arises to give a seat to RJD, then JMM will give one seat from its quota. At the same time, Congress will give one seat to the Left party from its quota. However, an official announcement on this is yet to be made.

JMM senior leaders said that discussions were held in a good atmosphere with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and General Secretary Mukul Wasnik on seat sharing in Jharkhand, Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Bihar.

A decision has been taken on Jharkhand and West Bengal. Both parties will jointly contest elections on 14 seats in Jharkhand. They said that the candidates have also been finalised for the polls. A decision on Bihar, Odisha and Assam will also be taken in a couple of days.

In the meeting at Mukul Wasnik's residence in New Delhi JMM's Supriyo Bhattacharya, Vinod Kumar Pandey, MLA Sudivya Kumar Sonu, State Congress in-charge Ghulam Ahmed Mir and State Congress President Rajesh Thakur were present.

Notably, in the 2019 General elections, Congress and JMM had agreed on a 9-5 formula. Congress had given two seats to Babulal Marandi led Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (P), while the JMM had given one seat to RJD from its quota.

Sources present in the meeting said that JMM has also staked claim on the seats of neighbouring states along with Jharkhand.

The party wants at least 12 Lok Sabha seats of tribal dominated areas from Bihar, Bengal, Odisha and Assam.
