RJD undermining PM Modi's push for backwards, dalits, women: BJP

Bhatia also accused the Congress party of pushing for Sharia-based personal laws.

BJP National Spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia.

BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia launched a scathing attack on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and its leader Tejashwi Yadav, accusing them of dismantling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of empowering backward classes, Dalits, and women. Bhatia alleged that the RJD's ideological stance opposes the Indian Constitution and instead seeks to impose Sharia Law.

Speaking at a press briefing, Bhatia said, “Those who claim to be ‘samajwadi’ (socialists) in Bihar are actually ‘namazwadi’. These so-called ‘namazwadis’ neither want Babasaheb’s Constitution nor do they respect it. They are only interested in promoting Sharia Law and want to empower just one community. RJD and Tejashwi Yadav are actively working to dismantle Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to uplift backward classes, Dalits, and women.”

He further criticised Tejashwi Yadav for his remarks on the Waqf Amendment Bill, which was passed in Parliament. “You talk about Sharia, while BJP stands by the Constitution. Tejashwi Yadav said he would throw the Constitutionally passed Waqf Amendment Bill into the dustbin. Maulana Tejashwi Yadav, the master of appeasement — have you even read the Constitution? Can any state government reject a law that has been duly passed in Parliament and signed by the President?” Bhatia questioned.

Bhatia also accused the Congress party of pushing for Sharia-based personal laws. “The Congress manifesto during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections stated that it would implement Sharia Law. It proposed personal laws and even suggested religion-based reservations, which directly contradicts the Constitution. The NDA will never allow such plans to succeed.”

He recalled a statement made by RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav on May 7, 2010, where he criticised the Waqf Board for allegedly grabbing land belonging to the government and the public. “Lalu himself had said that strict laws are needed to control the Waqf Board. If Tejashwi Yadav today gives inflammatory speeches against the Waqf Amendment Act, then his aim is to divide society. While our government in Bihar speaks of development, RJD speaks of Sharia Law. In Karnataka, they took rights meant for backward communities and handed them to Muslims,” Bhatia added.

He highlighted that the Waqf Amendment Bill is currently under judicial review. “This matter is pending before the Supreme Court, which has reserved its judgment. Why is Tejashwi Yadav taking such an anarchist approach and attempting to undermine the authority of the Supreme Court? How can he declare the law unconstitutional before the court has ruled on it? Has 9th-fail Tejashwi Yadav become more important than the Supreme Court? Jungle Raj is what Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav represent,” he said.

Bhatia went on to criticise Tejashwi Yadav for asking the public for 20 months to prove himself, questioning what the Yadav family had done during their long political tenure. “People of Bihar gave your family more than a decade. What did you do? There was the fodder scam, the value of human life was lost. You now talk about youth, but your party is still family-run. You never allowed anyone outside your family to become CM. You have never had a party president outside your family. And now you talk of youth empowerment? The youth, women, and backward classes are now with the NDA.”

These remarks came after Tejashwi Yadav, addressing the Vaishya Representative Conference in Patna on Sunday, took a dig at the NDA over their repeated use of the term “Jungle Raj” to criticise the opposition. He claimed that the NDA’s fearmongering tactics no longer resonate with the public and challenged them to speak on core issues like trade and economic growth.

“We have been in opposition for 20 years, and yet they keep blaming us. Why are they not taking responsibility for their own governance? What have they done for Bihar? Do they have any roadmap to boost trade or support small businesses? All they talk about is Jungle Raj. I was Deputy CM for 18 months — did people stop stepping out of their homes? The BJP's tactics of spreading fear won’t work in today’s time,” Tejashwi said.

The exchange comes ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, where both alliances are gearing up for a fierce political battle. While the NDA is focusing on development and law-and-order narratives, the RJD is positioning itself as a voice for economic growth and inclusive governance.
