The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is witnessing a pivotal leadership transition, as Lalu Prasad Yadav, the party's founder and long-time president, prepares to hand over the reins to his son, Tejashwi Yadav.
This shift marks a major milestone in the party's history and signals the beginning of a new era under the leadership of Tejashwi, who is currently the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly.
During a crucial meeting of the RJD National Executive, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav were granted full authority over all key decisions concerning the party, including matters related to its name and election symbol. This decision formally establishes Tejashwi Yadav as Lalu Yadav’s successor, solidifying his position as the future leader of the RJD.

Lalu Prasad Yadav, citing ongoing health issues, made it clear that Tejashwi Yadav would take on an even more prominent leadership role. He also called on the party to extend its full support to his son.
As part of this transition, the party’s constitution was amended to allow Tejashwi Yadav to have equal decision-making authority alongside his father, ensuring a smooth and orderly shift in leadership.

Following that, elections for the state president and other key organisational roles will take place.
A meeting of the state executive has been scheduled for June 21, to discuss the selection of Bihar’s new state president.

The leadership transition marks the end of an era in which Lalu Prasad Yadav, with his towering political influence, dominated the narrative of the RJD since its formation.
With Tejashwi Yadav now poised to take the helm, the party aims to consolidate its position, particularly in light of the upcoming electoral challenges in Bihar and at the national level.
Tejashwi Yadav’s prominence within the RJD has been on the rise, with a significant role in the party’s strategy within the INDIA bloc and his effective leadership during the Bihar Assembly elections.
As the likely future president of the RJD, Tejashwi is expected to lead the party into a new phase that focuses on engaging youth, strengthening grassroots mobilisation, and addressing pressing issues such as unemployment and inflation.
