Actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay has landed in controversy after disclosing two criminal cases in one election affidavit while omitting them in another, raising questions over transparency ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Vijay, founder and President of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is contesting from two constituencies—Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli East. The issue emerged after differences were noted between the affidavits submitted for the two seats.
In his earlier nomination filed from Perambur, Vijay did not mention any pending criminal cases. However, in the affidavit submitted two days later for the Tiruchirappalli East constituency, he disclosed two cases against him.
The first case relates to an alleged violation of election norms during his campaign activities following the filing of his nomination in Perambur. The case was registered at the Peravallur police station in Chennai and has now been included in the later affidavit. The second case stems from an FIR filed after a complaint by a fan who was allegedly assaulted by Vijay’s security personnel during a TVK conference in Madurai.
Addressing the discrepancy in his Tiruchirappalli East affidavit, Vijay stated that he had not received any summons or official communication regarding the Madurai case earlier. He claimed that he became aware of the matter only recently, which is why it was disclosed in the second nomination.
The variation between the two affidavits has sparked political debate, with critics questioning the inconsistency and calling for greater clarity. The development has added a fresh layer of controversy to Vijay’s electoral debut, as scrutiny intensifies over compliance with nomination disclosure norms.
