India's Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has revealed that staying focused on controllable aspects of the game while shutting out external distractions is the key to handling pressure, both on and off the cricket field.
Speaking during an interactive session with members of the Indian diaspora at a reception hosted by the High Commission of India in London on Saturday, Gill shared his approach to maintaining composure in high-pressure situations. His remarks came on the eve of India's series-deciding third One-Day International against England, where the visitors will be aiming to clinch a 2-1 series victory.
"The way I deal with pressure is by keeping focused on the things that are in my control and keeping myself away from the external factors," Gill said while interacting with fans and guests at the event. The young skipper stressed that concentrating on preparation, execution, and team responsibilities allows him to perform without being overwhelmed by expectations or outside opinions.
Gill has enjoyed a rapid rise in international cricket, taking on leadership responsibilities across formats. His calm temperament and consistent performances have made him one of India's most dependable batters, and he believes mental clarity is as important as technical preparation when competing at the highest level.
India's T20I captain Shreyas Iyer also addressed the gathering, reflecting on one of the most difficult phases of his career after being sidelined by injuries. Iyer credited the unwavering support of his teammates for helping him regain confidence and return to competitive cricket.
"I just wanted to get out of the hospital. The calls from my team members gave me a lot of motivation to head back to my training and come back stronger," Iyer said. He added that the encouragement he received from fellow players played a vital role in keeping him mentally positive during rehabilitation, ultimately inspiring him to work hard and make a successful comeback.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke about the significance of playing cricket in England, describing the United Kingdom as a place that holds a unique place in India's cricketing journey. He acknowledged the deep historical ties between the two nations while emphasizing the emotional connection Indian fans have with the national team.
"The UK is a special place. The history between our two countries can never be forgotten and should never be forgotten," Gambhir said. "Indian cricket does not just belong to the people sitting in the dressing room. It belongs to every honest Indian cricket fan, who supports us selflessly and unconditionally."

Gambhir also praised the passionate support the team continues to receive from Indian fans across the world, saying their encouragement provides added motivation to the players during overseas tours.
The event also featured an address by BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla, who offered practical advice to the players about staying mentally focused in the age of social media. Shukla urged members of the Indian team to avoid unnecessary distractions before matches, noting that online opinions can often create avoidable pressure.
"In India, the problem is that 99 percent of the people are experts in cricket," Shukla said with a smile. "So just try to avoid social media before a match and focus on your respective games. There's no dearth of talent in Team India, and this group is full of exceptionally talented players."
Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom P. Kumaran welcomed the players and officials to India House, congratulating the team for continuing to make the country proud through their performances on the international stage. He also highlighted the implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement (CETA), expressing optimism that the pact would strengthen cooperation in multiple sectors, including sports.
"We are hopeful that CETA opens up many possibilities for business services as well as sports-related activities," Kumaran said. "Over the years, Team India has made us proud many times over with your achievements."
The interaction concluded on an optimistic note as players, officials and members of the Indian community celebrated the team's achievements while looking ahead to the decisive ODI against England, where Gill and his side will be aiming to finish the tour on a winning note.
