A Delhi court on Friday dismissed the bail plea of Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar in the murder case of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar, who was fatally assaulted at the Chhatrasal Stadium in May 2021.

Additional Sessions Judge Sushil Kumar rejected the application after hearing arguments in the case involving the celebrated wrestler and several co-accused. Kumar and others are accused of abducting and brutally assaulting Dhankar and his friends following an alleged property dispute. Dhankar later succumbed to his injuries.

According to the post-mortem report, Dhankar suffered cerebral damage caused by the impact of a blunt object. Two of his friends also sustained injuries in the incident.

The prosecution has alleged that after being forcibly brought to the stadium, Dhankar was assaulted by multiple accused persons using baseball and hockey sticks.

Sushil Kumar was arrested in May 2021 and has remained in judicial custody since then. A sessions court had earlier granted him interim bail for one week in July 2023 to undergo knee surgery.

In October 2022, the trial court framed charges against Kumar under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including murder, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation and rioting with a deadly weapon. Charges under the Arms Act were also framed against him.

The case continues to be heard by the trial court.
