Against the annual target of Rs 20,000 crore last year, Jharkhand contributed nearly Rs 12,000 crore, while Bihar accounted for around Rs 8,000 crore in tax collections.

Former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has become the highest individual taxpayer in Jharkhand and Bihar combined during the financial year 2025-26. The exact amount of tax paid by Dhoni, however, has not been disclosed.

Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, D. Sudhakar Rao, shared the information during a press conference in Ranchi.

Rao said Jharkhand contributed a higher share of tax revenue than Bihar. He said against the annual target of Rs 20,000 crore last year, Jharkhand contributed nearly Rs 12,000 crore, while Bihar accounted for around Rs 8,000 crore in tax collections.

The Principal Chief Commissioner further shared that during the previous financial year, the Income Tax Department carried out raids against 12 business groups in connection with alleged tax evasion cases. More than 150 traders and businessmen were covered during these operations.

He also stated that over 90 cases related to tax evasion and non-payment of taxes were registered across Jharkhand and Bihar against various individuals and business entities. However, he refused to disclose the names of the groups or persons involved.

According to Rao, nearly 40 lakh people in Jharkhand and Bihar file income tax returns and pay taxes, whereas the number of PAN card holders in the two states together is close to five crore.

Speaking about the purpose of his visit to Ranchi, Rao said the new Income Tax Act 2025 has come into effect from April 2026. To create awareness about the provisions of the new law and the benefits of the amendments introduced, discussions were held with chartered accountants, business groups, and various organisations during his visit.
