Mbappé’s four goals in the tournament have also placed him just one behind Messi in the race for the 2026 Golden Boot.

Kylian Mbappe struck twice to draw level on 16 career World Cup goals, moving into a share of second place on the all-time scoring list as France overcame a lengthy rain interruption to defeat Iraq 3-0 and secure a place in the knockout rounds.

Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele was also on target for Les Bleus, rewarding supporters who endured a wet and frustrating evening in Philadelphia.
The French captain found the net in the 14th and 54th minutes, marking his 100th international appearance in memorable fashion despite the challenging weather conditions.

Mbappe's opener gave France a deserved 1-0 advantage before severe weather halted proceedings at halftime. Heavy rain and an approaching thunderstorm forced officials to suspend play for more than two hours, while ground staff worked tirelessly to clear standing water from the soaked Kentucky bluegrass surface at Lincoln Financial Field.

Messages on the stadium scoreboard urged spectators to seek shelter in covered areas as lightning threats loomed. Rain continued to pour throughout the delay, with fans wrapping themselves in ponchos and crowding beneath balconies and concourses to stay dry.

Iraq head coach Graham Arnold was briefly seen struggling with his rain poncho before eventually pulling it on and retreating to the dugout for cover.
Once play resumed, Mbappe again took centre stage as he continued his pursuit of the World Cup scoring record now held by Lionel Messi. Appearing in his third World Cup, the 27-year-old equalled Germany legend Miroslav Klose's tally of 16 goals and moved ahead of Brazilian icon Ronaldo on the all-time list.

Mbappe's first strike came from outside the penalty area, where he unleashed a precise left-footed effort—considered his weaker foot—that beat Iraq goalkeeper Ahmed Basil. Basil was making his first appearance of the tournament after captain Jalal Hassan conceded four goals in Iraq's opening 4-1 defeat to Norway.

His second goal arrived after Iraq defender Zaid Tahseen misdirected a pass towards his own goalkeeper. Dembele reacted quickest, gathering possession before squaring the ball for Mbappe to finish comfortably from close range.

The French forward nearly completed a hat trick late in the match after racing through on goal, but failed to convert before being substituted in the 90th minute. Mbappe played a key role in France's 2018 World Cup triumph and helped guide the team to the final in 2022, where he received the Silver Ball award as the tournament's second-best player.
