A day after Sunday’s nail-biting ODI, preparations for the Indian and South African squads’ departure to Raipur were disrupted on Monday morning when an unexpected medical emergency at Ranchi’s Radisson Blu Hotel triggered alarm among players and officials.
South African all-rounder Marco Jansen’s wife, Taniell Baptiste, suddenly fainted in the hotel lobby, prompting immediate action from the hotel staff. Medical assistance was called without delay, and a team from Orchid Hospital reached the spot within minutes.
After initial treatment, doctors found her condition to be serious and rushed her to the hospital in an ambulance. According to hospital sources, Taniell suffers from low blood pressure, and a sudden, significant drop earlier that morning caused her to collapse.
In light of the situation, Marco Jansen remained in Ranchi to be with his wife and did not travel with the rest of the South African team to Raipur. The team management has confirmed that he will miss the second ODI.
Meanwhile, Jharkhand State Cricket Association Vice-President Sanjay Pandey addressed the separate security scare that occurred during Sunday’s match, when a fan breached the barricade to reach Virat Kohli. Pandey described it as a lapse in security but clarified that the youth had no harmful intent and only wished to touch Kohli’s feet.
Both the BCCI and Virat Kohli advised against taking strict action. The fan, identified as Sobhith Murmu from Bengal, was detained for a day and later released by the police on a PR bond.
