PBKS seek to keep playoff hopes alive against LSG

Punjab’s campaign, which once appeared destined for a strong playoff finish, has witnessed a stunning collapse in the second half of the tournament.

Punjab Kings will be desperate to produce a dramatic turnaround and keep their shrinking playoff hopes alive when they face already-eliminated Lucknow Super Giants in a crucial IPL clash on Saturday evening.

Punjab’s campaign, which once appeared destined for a strong playoff finish, has witnessed a stunning collapse in the second half of the tournament. Their season began on a highly promising note, highlighted by a record-breaking 265-run chase against Delhi Capitals on April 25. At that stage, PBKS looked like genuine title contenders, remaining unbeaten through much of the first half of the competition with six victories in their opening seven matches.

However, the momentum has completely shifted since then. The Shreyas Iyer-led side has now suffered six consecutive defeats, a slump that has pushed them down to fifth place in the standings and left their playoff qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

To stay in contention, Punjab must first defeat Lucknow Super Giants in their final league fixture. Even that may not be enough, as they are now dependent on results from Sunday’s matches involving Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals.

Punjab would ideally want Rajasthan Royals to defeat Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals to overcome Kolkata Knight Riders. A victory for Mumbai would officially knock PBKS out of the playoff race, while a KKR win over Delhi could force qualification to be decided by net run rate. At present, Punjab hold a slight advantage over Kolkata in terms of NRR.

Before turning their attention to qualification permutations, Punjab’s immediate concern remains their alarming dip in form across all departments. Their aggressive batting approach, which had become their biggest strength earlier in the season, has lost its effectiveness in recent matches.

Young opener Priyansh Arya, who impressed heavily in the first half of the tournament, has managed only one half-century in his last seven innings and was dismissed for a duck in the previous game. Fellow opener Prabhsimran Singh has also struggled for consistency, registering just one fifty in his last five outings.

Australian batter Cooper Connolly has shown flashes of promise but has repeatedly failed to convert starts into impactful innings. Captain Shreyas Iyer, who remained among the leading run-scorers for much of the season, has also endured a sharp decline during the losing streak, crossing the fifty-run mark only once in the six defeats.

Punjab’s middle order, which played a key role in their memorable chase against Delhi Capitals earlier in the tournament, has also lost rhythm. Their bowling attack has struggled equally, leaking runs regularly both in the powerplay and at the death overs. Poor fielding standards have further compounded their problems, with dropped catches costing the team heavily in crucial moments.

Lucknow Super Giants, on the other hand, have already been eliminated from playoff contention after enduring a disappointing campaign of their own. LSG have managed only two wins in their last 10 matches and are coming into the contest after suffering a seven-wicket defeat to Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.

That match was dominated by teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose performance overshadowed Lucknow’s efforts. Despite their inconsistent season, LSG can still draw confidence from their recent performances at the Ekana Stadium, where they secured victories against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings in their last two home games.

One of the few positives for Lucknow this season has been the form of Australian batters Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis at the top of the order. The duo stitched together a rapid 109-run partnership in just 8.2 overs during the previous game and will once again be central to LSG’s hopes of finishing the season strongly in front of their home supporters.

Nicholas Pooran, who has struggled for runs recently with only 87 runs in his last four innings, will also be eager to regain form. Captain Rishabh Pant, whose season has largely been underwhelming apart from one half-century, will look to end the campaign on a positive note.

In the bowling department, Lucknow will also await clarity on the availability of veteran pacer Mohammed Shami, who missed the previous match.
The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm.
