The ferocity and fearlessness of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will collide with the firepower of a formidable batting line-up when a rejuvenated Rajasthan Royals face a confident Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL Eliminator on Wednesday.
Sunrisers Hyderabad endured a sluggish start to the season but gathered impressive momentum in the latter half of the tournament. The return of regular captain Pat Cummins for the final seven league matches proved decisive, with the side winning five of those encounters.
Having already defeated Rajasthan Royals twice during the league phase, the Hyderabad outfit will head into the knockout clash carrying a clear psychological edge.
Rajasthan, meanwhile, admitted they should have sealed a playoff berth much earlier instead of waiting until the final day of the league stage. Nevertheless, the Riyan Parag-led side now has the opportunity to make amends and push deeper into the tournament with a statement victory over Sunrisers.
As expected, Royals’ batting has revolved around the prolific Sooryavanshi (583 runs), Yashasvi Jaiswal (397) and Dhruv Jurel (458), who have contributed the majority of the team’s runs this season.

Sunrisers have similarly depended on their explosive top order featuring Abhishek Sharma (563 runs), Travis Head (393), and Ishan Kishan (569). Adding further strength is Heinrich Klaasen, who has been exceptional at number four and is enjoying the finest IPL campaign of his career with 606 runs.
Despite the undeniable destructive potential of both batting units, Jaiswal and Head have lacked consistency at times this season. The Eliminator now presents the perfect stage for either batter to produce a match-defining innings.
Sunrisers remain arguably the most dangerous batting side in the competition, making it no surprise that Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara was questioned about plans to contain Hyderabad’s aggressive top order.
“They’re a very good side. They bat with freedom and back themselves to attack throughout the innings, which they’ve done all season. We know we’re probably not going to restrict them to 120 or 130, but we need to maintain discipline while still being aggressive with our lines and lengths.
“Even when attempting slower balls or hard lengths, the execution has to come with intent. Against Sunrisers, it’s always going to be a serious challenge for us. We’ll see what plans we can put together in the next couple of days,” Sangakkara said after Royals secured qualification.
The Royals coach will once again rely heavily on leading wicket-taker Jofra Archer (21 wickets) to deliver another decisive powerplay spell, much like his performance against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium where he exploited both conventional and cross-seam movement brilliantly.
Nandre Burger and Brijesh Sharma have also delivered impactful spells at different stages of the tournament across all phases of the innings.
Young leg-spinner Yash Raj Punja has emerged as Rajasthan’s primary spin option ahead of Ravi Bishnoi in his debut IPL season, while veteran Ravindra Jadeja will need to contribute more significantly with both bat and ball.
At the top, Sooryavanshi is unlikely to show any hesitation against the likes of Cummins, leading wicket-taker Eshan Malinga (19 wickets), and Sakib Hussain. If the teenager gets going during the powerplay, he has the ability to single-handedly shift the momentum of the contest.
Sunrisers also possess an exciting young wrist-spinner in Shivang Kumar, who has impressed with his control and wicket-taking ability during the middle overs in his debut season.
The Mullanpur Stadium has largely favoured batters this season. In four league games played at the venue, teams crossed the 220-run mark on three occasions, including Punjab Kings’ massive total of 254.
Match starts at 7:30 pm.
