A landslide, believed to have been triggered by a cloudburst, hit the remote village of Sharmani under Ghatu Panchayat in Kullu’s Nirmand subdivision in the early hours of Tuesday. The disaster caused major destruction and loss of life.
As per initial reports, the incident took place around 2 am when residents were asleep, leaving them with little time to escape. One house was completely buried under the debris. So far, three people have been rescued, one body has been recovered, and three persons are still missing. The deceased has been identified as Brasiti Devi, wife of Shiv Ram while Chunni Lal, Anju, Jagriti and Pupesh are still missing.
Three people, Dharam Das, his wife Kala Devi and Shiv Ram, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Nirmand hospitals by the villagers.
Confirming the incident, SDM Nirmand Manmohan Singh said, “The landslide caused severe damage in the village. Rescue operations are underway with the help of the local administration, police, and disaster response teams."
The SDM added that search efforts are continuing to trace the missing person. However, the steep terrain and risk of more landslides are making the operation difficult.
Authorities have asked people in nearby areas to remain alert as the region continues to experience unstable weather. Rescue teams are still at the site and further updates are awaited.
