According to the police, the arrested individuals are members of a newly formed extremist outfit identified as Indian Mujahideen-K. Mahanta claimed the group was actively attempting to expand its presence in the Northeast.

Eleven people were arrested in Assam and Tripura for their alleged links with Bangladesh-based fundamentalist groups, police said on Tuesday. Guwahati Police Commissioner Parthasarathi Mahanta said the arrests were carried out by the Special Task Force (STF) following specific intelligence inputs shared by central agencies. He said coordinated operations were conducted late Monday night across Assam’s Barpeta, Chirang and Darrang districts, along with one location in Tripura.

“We have arrested a total of 11 jihadi elements who were working under the direct instructions of Bangladesh-based groups,” Mahanta said. Of those arrested, 10 were picked up from different parts of Assam, while one was arrested in Tripura.

According to the police, the arrested individuals are members of a newly formed extremist outfit identified as Indian Mujahideen-K. Mahanta claimed the group was actively attempting to expand its presence in the Northeast.

“Their objective was to destabilise Assam and other parts of the region. They aimed to disturb communal harmony and establish what they referred to as ‘Muslim supremacy’,” he said.

Police officials said investigations are ongoing to trace the group’s wider network, funding channels and operational links with other extremist organisations, both within India and across the border. Security agencies have intensified surveillance in the region following the arrests.
