11 killed as car falls into canal in UP's Gonda

A Bolero carrying 15 passengers lost control and veered into a canal in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district, resulting in the death of 11 people.

Eleven people tragically lost their lives on Sunday when a Bolero carrying 15 passengers veered off the road and plunged into a canal in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district. The victims, according to police, were returning from a pilgrimage to a temple when the fatal accident occurred.


The local authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased or the details of the incident. Rescue and relief operations are currently underway, with the local administration and emergency teams on the scene to assist the victims' families and manage the aftermath.


Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims. In an official statement, he directed officials to ensure that the injured passengers are immediately transported to the hospital and receive the best possible medical care. The Chief Minister also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

 

Bina (35), Kajal (22), Mahak (12), Durgesh, Nandini, Ankit, Shubh, Sanju Verma, Anju, Anusuya, and Saumiya are the names of the deceased. The majority of the victims were members of the same family. Locals who saw the accident quickly called the police. Locals helped law enforcement officials conduct a rescue effort and recover the bodies from the canal.

 

 

Rahul Verma, a resident of Itiyathok and an eyewitness to the accident, said the road was slippery due to rain in the morning.nThe SUV was running on the road built next to the canal and when the driver applied the brakes it slipped and fell into the canal, he said.


"We immediately called the police and villagers to the spot and pulled out the SUV with the help of a rope," he said. A teenage girl, who survived the accident, said, 'We were all going to visit Prithvinath temple. At the time of the incident, the women and girls were singing 'bhajans'". Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condoled the loss of lives in the accident and announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased.
