At least 22 pilgrims sustained injuries when a pickup truck they were traveling in overturned near Shahpur village in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district on Monday, police officials confirmed.
According to authorities, around 30 pilgrims from Kaithal district in Haryana were en route to Amritsar to offer prayers at the Golden Temple after visiting multiple Sikh religious sites. Their journey took a tragic turn when the vehicle met with an accident on the hilly stretch of the Garhshankar-Nangal road, between Kot and Shahpur villages.
Police stated that the driver lost control of the pickup truck while navigating a sharp turn near Ghata, causing the vehicle to overturn. The impact left 22 passengers injured, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Emergency personnel and locals helped transport the injured to the civil hospital in Garhshankar for medical treatment. Among them, six individuals sustained more serious injuries and were referred to a hospital in Patiala for specialised care.
A senior medical officer at the civil hospital in Garhshankar reported that the condition of those receiving treatment there is stable. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident to determine whether road conditions, driver error, or vehicle malfunction played a role.
This incident highlights the risks associated with travel on winding and hilly roads, particularly for vehicles carrying large groups of passengers. Local authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution while navigating such terrain to prevent further accidents.
