Twenty-four newly elected Members of the District Council (MDCs) from the Tipra Motha Party were sworn in on Monday in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), even as party founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma called for urgent prioritisation of youth, health, education and opportunities in shaping a “new Tripura”.

The oath was administered by Law Secretary Shankari Das. Four BJP MDCs boycotted the ceremony.

Addressing reporters after the swearing-in, Debbarma said the direction of governance would determine the future of both the state and the country. “A new Tripura and a new India are being built. If we don’t give priority to youths, health, education, and opportunities, then the entire society will suffer, and the state and nation will suffer,” he said.

He stressed the need for systemic change, arguing that development cannot be achieved without altering administrative attitudes and functioning. “We must change our thinking first. I want an administration that should come forward which does not work on its whims,” he added.

Reflecting on the past five years, Debbarma said incremental efforts were insufficient and called for structural reforms. “If we want a young Tripura, then we have to change and clear the system. We have to change the attitude also,” he said.

He proposed a broader consultative approach, urging the inclusion of professionals beyond politics, including former IAS officers, members of the judiciary, students, and those from art and culture, to design policies in key sectors such as drinking water, healthcare, education, and entrepreneurship.

Debbarma also appealed to the Centre to work closely with the TTAADC, asserting its centrality to the state’s development. “Tripura cannot develop without TTAADC. Now that elections are over, we should work to develop the people of TTAADC,” he said.
