Three people were killed and two others sustained serious injuries in a tragic road accident near Bel Baba Mandir on Rampur Road in the Haldwani Kotwali area of Nainital district on Monday late night. The deceased were from the same family.
The accident happened around 1 am when a Scorpio coming from Haldwani collided head-on with an Alto coming from the opposite side. The three people who died were all from Banbhulpura in Haldwani. Two others were pulled out with great difficulty from the badly crushed Alto and taken to Sushila Tiwari Hospital, where their condition is still critical.
Police said the people in the Scorpio ran away from the spot after the crash, leaving the vehicle behind. The SUV has been seized, and efforts are on to trace the owner and driver.
Circle Officer Nitin Lohani said the police reached quickly after receiving the call. With help from locals, the injured were rescued. He added that reckless driving seems to be the cause, but the matter was under investigation.
Between July 2023 and 2025, Haldwani district has reported 425 road accidents. These accidents killed 305 people and left 424 seriously injured. Officials said overspeeding, wrong-side driving, overloading, and drunk driving are the main reasons behind such crashes.
