Nearly 31 jail inmates have been booked on charges, including rioting and arson, in connection with a clash inside Kapurthala Central Jail that left three inmates injured, according to a senior police officer on Monday.
Police had to use tear gas shells and also resorted to a cane charge after inmates of Block-4 inside the prison clashed on Saturday night.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police, Kapurthala, Gaurav Toora, 31 inmates have been booked for rioting, arson, attempt to murder, obstructing public servants from duty, and criminal conspiracy. He added that the inmates have also been booked under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and the Prisons Act.
During the clash, inmates tried to manhandle and attack jail officials. Some of them also set fire to an object outside their barracks. According to police, they managed to reach the roof of the barracks after breaking a gate and an iron grill that led to the rooftop.
Police said two inmates were injured during the clash. Another inmate was injured after being hit by a tear gas shell. No police personnel or jail staff were injured.
On Sunday, police recovered iron rods, sticks, and mobile phones from inmates who went on a rampage inside the jail. Opposition parties have criticised the Bhagwant Mann government over the Kapurthala jail incident. They said it once again shows a worsening law and order situation in the state.
