Seven students lost their lives and over 15 were injured after the roof of a primary school collapsed in Rajasthan's Jhalawar on Friday morning, while classes were underway.
The incident took place at Piplodi Primary School, prompting a large-scale rescue operation involving police, local residents, and district officials. The building, constructed around 20 years ago, had a roof made of heavy stone slabs, which worsened the severity of the collapse and complicated rescue efforts.
Speaking to the media, Jhalawar Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar confirmed that four children had died, and 17 others sustained injuries in the incident. “Ten of the injured children have been referred to Jhalawar for advanced treatment, and three to four of them are reported to be in critical condition,” he said.
Heart-wrenching visuals from the site showed local residents rushing to rescue the trapped children, teachers, and staff. At least four JCB machines were deployed to assist in clearing the rubble, while rescue efforts continued on a war footing. District officials, including the collector, along with disaster relief teams, quickly reached the spot to coordinate rescue operations. Family members of the students arrived at the site in panic after receiving news of the collapse.
Education Minister Madan Dilawar issued a statement expressing grief over the loss of young lives and promised swift action. “I have directed district authorities to make all necessary arrangements for the treatment of the injured children and to ensure they face no hardship. I will also order a probe into the incident to determine the cause of the building’s collapse. I have spoken to the collector and instructed officials to closely monitor the situation and extend every possible help,” he said.
The injured were initially rushed to the Manohar Thana Hospital, and those with more serious injuries were later shifted to a larger medical facility in Jhalawar, officials said. Teams are still searching through the debris for any surviving trapped people as part of ongoing rescue operations. As the situation progresses, authorities are anticipated to provide additional information.
