Forty students at the Bellampalli Government SC Girls Hostel in Telangana’s Mancherial district were hospitalised on Friday after falling ill from suspected food poisoning, with students alleging they were served rice infested with worms. Panic set in around 7:30 pm when students began complaining of dizziness and vomiting after dinner.

In a pathetic experience shared on social media, a girl mentioned her experience with the warden, where the latter had initially refused to arrange an ambulance, as she would lose her job, and instead, a quack to administer an injection to the students without getting them consulted with a doctor.

As quoted by the girls themselves, the staff did not pay heed to their complaints until a number of students began vomiting after eating the food. It was only when the parents were notified and stepped in then the students were finally taken for medical treatment at the hospital. This incident has now infuriated the parents, who are demanding severe action against the hostel staff and management. The students also expressed concern, saying they are supposed to appear for Class 10 pre-final exams in two weeks and that such incidents could affect their preparation.

Such alarming news is, in fact, the latest in a string of food poisoning cases in the state of Telangana. Only last week, 38 students at the Bodiyathanda Government Primary School were hospitalised — 10 critically — after having a mid-day meal, just a day after 45 students fell ill in Sangareddy district. While the exact cause of the Mancherial outbreak is still being investigated, the students showed classic symptoms of food poisoning, including severe stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting.
