As many as 44 students of a government school in Coimbatore were admitted to the hospital on Tuesday after complaining of stomach aches following the consumption of the midday meal served at the school. Officials said all the children are currently stable and under observation.
The incident occurred at the Coimbatore Corporation Government Middle School in Koundampalayam, where more than 200 students study. According to preliminary information, the students were served their regular midday meal during school hours. Shortly after eating, several students began experiencing discomfort and stomach pain.
Upon inspection, school authorities reportedly discovered a dead lizard in the food that had been served to the students. The distribution of the meal was immediately halted, and health authorities were informed about the situation.
A total of 44 students were rushed to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for treatment. Another student was taken by his parents to a different medical facility for advanced care. Doctors at the hospital examined the children and began treatment as a precautionary measure.
Commissioner Sivaguru Prabhakaran said that the meal distribution was stopped immediately after the presence of a lizard in the food was discovered. He added that five doctors were sent to attend to the affected students.
“At present, 30 boys and 13 girls are receiving treatment at the hospital. All of them are doing well and are under continuous observation. If the parents and students wish, they can return home once they have fully recovered,” he said.
The commissioner further stated that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident to determine how the contamination occurred. He added that a circular will be issued to schools with instructions to closely monitor food preparation and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, parents gathered outside the school campus and staged a protest demanding strict action against those responsible. Police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain law and order. Officials said further steps will be taken after the inquiry report is submitted.
