The post-mortem report of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, a youth from Bihar’s Bhojpur district who was killed in a police encounter this month, has revealed that he sustained five bullet injuries, primarily in his thighs and left leg, raising fresh questions over the circumstances of the incident.
Tiwari was shot by Bihar Police on June 17 in an open field near his native village, Bilauti, under the Shahpur police station area. He later succumbed to his injuries at Patna Medical College and Hospital. While police officials have maintained that the firing was carried out in self-defense, the deceased’s family has alleged that he was killed in cold blood despite surrendering.
A video that surfaced on social media appeared to show Tiwari discarding his pistol, further intensifying public outrage and casting doubt on the police’s version of events.
According to the post-mortem findings, the first bullet struck the upper front of Tiwari’s left thigh, followed by a second on the inner side of the mid-left thigh. The third bullet hit the inner side of the mid-right thigh, while the fourth struck the outer right thigh. The fifth bullet was found to have hit the back of his mid-left leg.
The report aligns with earlier statements made by surgeon M.H. Ansari of Ara Sadar Hospital, who had indicated that Tiwari sustained four to five gunshot wounds, primarily affecting his legs and lower abdomen.
Amid mounting protests, a judicial commission has been constituted to investigate the encounter. The panel, headed by retired Patna High Court Justice Vinod Kumar Sinha, visited Bilauti village on Thursday and met with Tiwari’s family to collect details related to the case. The commission has also sought written submissions to assist in the probe.
Tiwari’s mother, Asha Devi, has expressed a lack of trust in the state authorities, alleging involvement of senior officials in the incident. “I don’t trust the police or the Chief Minister. The Superintendent of Police gave the order after instructions from the District Magistrate. We demand justice and are ready to approach the High Court or even the authorities in Delhi. There should be a CBI inquiry,” she said.
She further alleged that her other son, Chandan Tiwari, was threatened by police officials for speaking to the media. “The SP warned him not to talk to reporters or face consequences similar to Bharat. The SP should be transferred immediately,” she claimed.
Justice (Retd.) Sinha stated that the commission is in the process of gathering information from the family and local residents. He added that further steps would be taken after reviewing all submitted documents and evidence.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP and Janata Dal (United) National Working President Sanjay Jha assured that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry. “The investigation has been entrusted to a retired judge, and the government will act on the report. There should be no politicisation of the issue. Maintaining law and order and upholding the rule of law in Bihar remains the NDA government’s top priority,” he said.
