A total of 722 candidates remain in the fray for the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections after 67 contenders withdrew their nominations on the final day of withdrawal on Thursday, officials said.
Among those who stepped out of the contest is National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Md Aminul Islam from the Mankachar constituency, who had recently resigned from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
Officials said that four nominees of the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) and one leader from the Gondwana Ganatantra Party also withdrew their candidatures, while the remaining withdrawals were by independent candidates. The ASDC candidates who pulled out include Kamal Singh Bey from Bokajan, Mandal Enghi from Howraghat, Gulson Bey from Diphu, and Anjoshi Terang from Haflong.
Earlier, a total of 815 candidates had filed 1,389 nomination papers for the 126 Assembly constituencies in the state. Following scrutiny, 789 candidates were found eligible to contest the elections.
Several prominent leaders are in the fray, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, and Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, along with several cabinet ministers.
Polling for the Assembly elections is scheduled to be held on April 9, while the counting of votes will take place on May 4.
