Police have apprehended two persons after a brief encounter in connection with the murder of an AAP sarpanch in Punjab. The sarpanch was shot dead by unknown attackers during a wedding function.
Acting on specific information, police intercepted two youths riding a motorcycle in Naushehra Pannuan. Tarn Taran SSP Surendra Lamba said the accused opened fire at the police team and tried to flee.
The two accused, identified as Sharanpreet Singh and Hardeep Singh from Chola Sahib in Tarn Taran, sustained leg injuries during the crossfire and have been admitted to hospital, he said.
He said Sharanpreet is one of the four main accused in the sarpanch murder case. He was present on the day of the incident along with the shooters involved in the killing. Further probe in the case is underway, the SSP added.
Harbarinder Singh, the Aam Aadmi Party sarpanch of Thathian Mehta village, was shot dead by two unidentified assailants during a marriage event in Tarn Taran district on Wednesday. He had gone to attend a wedding at a marriage palace when three armed men opened fire at him from close range.
The incident occurred nearly a month after another sarpanch and AAP leader, Jharmal Singh of Valtoha village in Amritsar district, was shot dead during a wedding function.
